Promed is so cool!

My friend Leigh Ann Clark got me going on ProMed back when we worked in the infectious disease lab in Atlanta.  It is a daily update  of health threats throughout the world.  They have updates on most everything that's infectious, this includes mysterious outbreaks, avian flu and plague.

For example, on November 4th, a plague outbreak was reported in Uganda.
This website has changed my perspective of the world and the places I plan to visit someday.  Before I started studying infectious diseases, I thought about the world in terms of art and war.  But now, I think about it in terms of art, infectious diseases and healthcare.  I think that it is more interesting to think about the world in terms of diseases than in terms of politics, though I guess that they are somewhat similar.   Politics is, to a great extent, about the circulation of money, while infectious diseases is, to a great extent, about the circulation of germs.   Germs are much more interesting than war and possible more important.  More people die because of germs than war....even in the US.  If we had moments of silence for everyone who died from antibiotic resistant infections, the world would be a quieter place.
